Hotel Pest Control Checklist

A property-wide checklist covering guest rooms, kitchens and common areas.

6 min read

Why hotels are a special case

A hotel is really several different environments under one roof — guest rooms, kitchens and restaurants, public areas, back-of-house and a service yard — each with its own pest risks. Add a constant flow of guests, luggage and deliveries, and a single reported sighting can travel straight to a public review.

This checklist works through the property zone by zone. It's a framework to structure a program and staff routines around, not a substitute for professional inspection.

Guest rooms

Inspect on turnover for signs of bed bugs — the highest-profile guest-room risk — checking mattress seams, headboards, and the joints of upholstered furniture.

Check for gaps around skirting, pipework and air-conditioning units that pests could use, and confirm window and balcony door seals are intact.

Treat any guest report as urgent and handle the room discreetly, isolating it from bookings until it's confirmed clear.

Kitchens and food and beverage

Apply full commercial-kitchen hygiene discipline: daily deep cleaning, sealed food storage, tight waste management, and clean drains and grease traps.

Monitor the warm gaps behind and beneath equipment for cockroach and rodent activity, and keep dry stores rotated and inspected for stored-product pests.

Manage flies at source through waste and drain hygiene as much as through any trap.

Public areas and back-of-house

Keep lobbies, corridors, banquet and event spaces clean, with particular attention after functions where food and drink residue is left behind.

Monitor store rooms, laundry, plant rooms and staff areas — the low-traffic back-of-house spaces where activity can build unnoticed.

Watch landscaping and water features near entrances, which can bring mosquitoes and other pests close to the building.

Loading bay, waste and exterior

The service yard and waste area are the property's front line: keep the bin store clean, lidded and away from the building, and clear spillage promptly.

Inspect the building exterior for entry points, and keep doors to the yard closed or screened.

Check drainage and any standing water around the property, especially through the monsoon.

Handling guest reports discreetly

Have a clear, calm procedure for guest pest reports: acknowledge quickly, move the guest if needed, isolate and inspect the room, and keep a record. How a hotel handles a report often matters as much to the guest as the incident itself.

Keep inspection, monitoring and treatment records across all zones. Beyond supporting food-safety obligations in the F&B operation, a documented program is what lets management see patterns and demonstrate diligence.
